Blackwing pencils are available in four different types of graphite:

MATTE BLACK
The softest of the core Blackwing models, the Matte is ideal for musicians, woodworkers, & anyone who prefers a dark, rich line. Finished in matte black with the signature square ferrule & black eraser

PEARL WHITE
Features a pearl white finish, gold imprint, white eraser, & a balanced graphite core—softer than the 602, firmer than the Matte

602/GREY
Features a firm, smooth graphite core for “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed.” Finished in gunmetal grey with Blackwing’s iconic square ferrule & pink eraser

NATURAL
Features a clear matte finish over exposed Incense-cedar, extra-firm graphite, gold imprint, grey eraser, & the iconic square Blackwing ferrule.

THE RISE & FALL
The Blackwing 602 pencil has inspired legendary creators—from John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones to Disney animator Shamus Culhane. First introduced in the 1930s by the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company, its signature rectangular eraser and exceptional quality made it iconic.
Discontinued in 1998 after a series of corporate acquisitions, the 602 lived on in cult status—fans were paying up to $40 for a single pencil on eBay.

THE REVIVAL
In 2007, Palomino introduced a line of pencils made with Genuine Incense-cedar and premium graphite. Artists and writers began comparing them to the original Blackwing 602, prompting calls to revive the iconic brand. In 2010, drawing on over a century of pencil-making expertise, the Blackwing pencil was reintroduced.

Blackwing pencils are manufactured in Japan from materials sourced in California & Oregon

Blackwing pencils are made from California Incense-cedar, Japanese graphite, & feature a signature aluminum ferrule with a replaceable eraser

Each pencil is about 8" long (normal pencil length)
